Breeding Program
To breed champions you must have a combination of the right genetics, environment and training. We have proven we are on track with this! After eight years of breeding, from our first crop of foals we produced: the 2009/10 winner of the National 7 yr old series, the winner of the 7 yr old Championship at the New Zealand Young Horse show, the winner of the 7 yr of the Year title at the Horse of the Year show 2010 and the winner of the 1.35m Horse of the Year title 2010. Mount View Sport Horses was also the winner of the Leading Breeder Award at the 2010 New Zealand Young Horse Championships.
Our breeding program has been developed out of a carefully planned strategy. We believe the broodmare is the key to success. We initially purchased four top young mares from Europe and then competed them here in New Zealand successfully, with three reaching Grand Prix level. Having top bloodlines combined with top performance, we then used superior European stallions which had proven themselves both in breeding and the sport. Consequently, today we have a very exciting line up of young horses we are bringing on for future competition.
As our breeding program has matured we have been convinced that one of the keys to achieving our goals is to base our program on the philosophy of the Holsteiner studbook using mare families as a foundation to our breeding. The Holsteiner studbook is one of the smallest studbooks in Europe, however it has consistently produced some of the worlds most successful international showjumpers.
The German Holsteiner breeders have strived to produce athletic, uncomplicated and reliable horses with strong nerves. The well balanced temperament and the outstanding character are of great importance. We also consider these factors to be vital.
We have continued to have close links with our contacts in Europe, and draw a lot from their depth of knowledge and experience. Mount View has also recently formed a closer link with the Holsteiner Verband.
Since initially importing to New Zealand four mares and two stallions in 2002, we have since imported quality holsteiner mares and one holsteiner colt. This youngstock comes from strong holsteiner families. They are each closely related to successful breeding horses as well as top performing show jumpers at the highest level. We have sourced bloodlines we believe will make the difference and bring fourth our vision of producing horses that will one day successfully compete at an Olympic Games or World Equestrian Games. Already we have a young horse which was born, raised and produced at Mount View competing successfully in North America with Katie McVean.
Having sourced top mares, both in bloodlines and type, from top families, we select the best fillies bred at our stud to be part of our breeding program. Every care is taken with our infoal mares, foals and age group horses.
Breeding is a game of chance, however knowing the stallions and mare lines and what they have produced can help increase your odds of breeding a superstar foal. Our focus is to produce a horse with correct conformation and excellent character so we can sell our horses with confidence, knowing the riders that take them on can have great pleasure and success with them.
